Chongqing's Animal Husbandry Showing a Strong Tendency of Scale Production

08-26-2005

According to the statistics of investigation on animal husbandry carried out by the Chongqing Agriculture Investigation Team in thirty-nine districts and counties, the animal husbandry in the form of base breeding shows a strong tendency of scale production after the Municipal Government's "Project of Double Million Industrialization of the Animal Husbandry" being implemented. Chongqing's batch meat raisers in the five categories of pork, beef, mutton, poultry and rabbit amounted to 68648, with a meat output of 246606 tons, which is 14.8 percent of the total. Of the 19.09 million pigs ready for meat in 2004, 11.3 percent are from the batch raisers (each can provide at least twenty pigs per year); 6.2% of the beef was provided by the batch raisers (each can provide at least ten calves per year); 13.9% of the mutton (each can provide at least fifty mutton sheep per year); 23.4% of the 137.37 million poultry (each can provide at least 3000 poultry per year); 12.6% of the rabbit (each can provide at least 2000 rabbits per year).
The mass breeding scale of the animal husbandry is still on the increase. Each batch raiser can provide an average of 51.42 pigs, with an increase of 17.45 compared with 33.97 of 2003, each batch raiser of calves 10.3 calves, and each batch raiser of sheep 57.29 mutton sheep, each batch raiser of poultry, 5231.81 with nearly 1000 more than that of 2003.Chongqing's animal husbandry breeding is on the way to concentrate on the batch raisers, which shows an obvious tendency of mass breeding.
According to investigations and analyses, the strong increasing tendency of the husbandry mass breeding is due to a better profit because the batch breeding units have advantages to the general household raisers in term of fund, information and techniques, and they are easy to be supported and encouraged by the leading industrial enterprises. Take as an example the two traditional husbandry types of pork and poultry. According to the investigation of the Dazheng Professional Hoggery, one pig raised there brought in a net profit of 250 Yuan, more than the 150-200 Yuan gained by the general household raiser; and one chicken raised by Guangdong Wenshi Group brought in a net profit of two or three Yuan, 0.8-1.5 Yuan more than the household raiser's profit. For this reason, a group of leading enterprises has gradually built up their own pig-raising bases, such as Huamu Group, Sanmu Group, Dazheng Husbandry Science and Technology Group, Hechuan Jinzhou Canned Food Plant. Now a leading industrial enterprise chain of husbandry mass breeding has mainly come into shape in the forms of influential large-scale raisers and professional large-scale raisers, which have been the important force in the husbandry structure adjustment and the improvement of the industrialization of the husbandry in Chongqing.
According to the development tendency, the proper scale breeding is the fundamental way out for the development of the animal husbandry. The present animal husbandry breeding in Chongqing has displayed the situation of decreased scattered raisers and increased mass breeding. Nevertheless, the mass breeding scale is still in a small proportion with a poor ability for market development. Greater effort should be made to motivate the mass breeding and to foster more big enterprise companies and groups as the main bodies of market competition. Consequently, the development of the commodity bases will be stimulated under the "company plus household" mode so as to build high standard and high-tech processing enterprises under one industrial chain of producing-supplying-marketing or trade-industry-breeding, which will not only extend the industrial line but also increase the households''income.
