Urban Living Conditions: An Overview

The urban living conditions in Chongqing have witnessed revolutionary changes since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China sixty years ago. The living conditions have been transformed from pursuit for basic necessities into the pursuit for well-off. The poverty in the municipality has been substantially alleviated and the people are no longer worried about the supply of living necessities. Now the people are striving for building a fully well-off society. In particular, as of the end of 2008, the local GDP topped RMB 500 billion (which was RMB 509.666 billion), representing a 365.9 times growth compared with the figure of 1949, or 66.2 times growth compared with the figure of 1979 when China began to reform and open up.

The administration has cast more attention on and taken efforts to improve the welfare of the people in addition to their efforts in facilitating economic development. With the implementation of the initiatives such as “Making the People Well Off and Chongqing Prosper”, “Building Harmonious Chongqing and A Fully Well-off Society”, the urban and rural images have been remarkably improved while the people have more access to the benefits of economy growth, especially continuously increasing income and improved living conditions. According to the survey result by Chongqing General Survey Team under the State Statistics Bureau, disposable income per capita of local urban residents had increased from RMB 355 in 1979 to RMB 15,709 in 2008 by 43.3 times, with an average annual increase rate of 14% and consumption expenditure per capita from RMB 324 in 1979 to RMB 12,269 in 2008 by 36.9 times, with an average annual increase rate of 13.4%.
