Chongqing's Environment Quality Improved in May 2009

The overall environmental quality of Chongqing was improved in May. According to statistics, the city proper passed a “good” May, all days of which witnessed an air quality rating of “Good” or better, representing an improvement of 6.5 percentage points on a y-o-y basis. The major pollutant is inhalable particles. The water quality of the “three rivers” (the Yangtze, Jialing and Wujiang) at all of the eight points subject to national control and monitoring satisfied the requirements for Grade II water quality, representing an improvement of 12.5 percentage points on a year on year basis. The points reaching Grade I – III standards accounts for 85.3% of the 41 points of the 40 Class-I tributaries; the points in an eutrophic state accounted for 42.6% of the 47 points in backwater zone of the 40 Class-I tributaries. All of the points subject to national control and monitoring and the concentrated drinking water sources all over the towns in Chongqing have the water qualified for such functions. The frequency of acid rain at the points subject to national control and monitoring witnessed a y-o-y decrease of 26.8 percentage points.
