Chongqing Realizes Total Retail Sales of Consumer Goods of RMB 176.53bn in Q1 2016

  According to statistics released by Department of Market Monitoring of Chongqing Commerce Commission a few days ago, Chongqing's commercial economy had a steady start in Q1 2016. The total retail sales of consumer goods were up to RMB 176.53 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 13%. The growth was increased by 1 percentage point in comparison with the same period of previous year. The total volume of product sales in Chongqing was RMB 514.23 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 15.7%. The turnover of lodging and catering industry was RMB 37.88 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 18.6%.
  In the first quarter, emerging consumption effectively stimulated Chongqing’s consumptive power. E-commerce business experienced a rapid growth. Corporate enterprises above designated size in Chongqing achieved retail sales of RMB 4.55 billion through public network, with a year-on-year increase of 38.1%. Chain-store operations witnessed an accelerated development. For example, Yonghui Superstores had newly opened five branches, boosting the sales achieving a growth of over 10%.
  Consumption and service industries like travel and leisure industries enjoyed a rapid growth. In January and February, the increases of visitor number and foreign exchange income from tourism industry were 7.8% and 8.1%, respectively. Entertainment industry also had a vigorous growth. In February and on the first day of the lunar year, Chongqing’s cinema consumption rewrote monthly and daily records of box office, respectively.
  With the growth of emerging consumption, Chongqing's physical consumption was also booming. In the first quarter, total retail sales of consumer goods was up to RMB 150.85 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 12.9%. The commodities covering 13 categories such as food, furniture and telecommunication equipment maintained a double-digit growth. Consumption of fashionable and individual commodities increased rapidly. The growth rate of telecommunication equipment was 32.3%. Shoes and hats, cosmetics and toys grew by 26.2%, 13.8% and 11%, respectively. Moreover, smart watch and other commodities have become new consumption hotspots.
  In addition, consumption of automobile and property also realized a steady growth. The data showed that a growth of 18.2% was realized in automobile, 15.9% in petroleum and related products, 20.2% in house-consumption-related building & decoration materials, and 25.3% in furniture.
  It was worth mentioning that, as a convention and exhibition city under construction, Chongqing organized some promotion events like exhibitions in the first quarter, creating a warm atmosphere for consumers. In the first quarter, all districts, counties and enterprises actively carried out various promotion activities, creating a favorable atmosphere for consumers. Chongqing organized the conventions and exhibitions covering a total area of 1,612,000 m2, which realized direct revenue of RMB 1.62 billion and stimulated consumption worth RMB 13.85 billion.
