“We Hope to Build Partnerships with Chongqing in Urban Transportation”-- Thomas Geisel, Mayor of Düsseldorf, Germany
Thomas Geisel, Mayor of Düsseldorf, Germany
On November 28, during his visit to Chongqing, Thomas Geisel, Mayor of Düsseldorf, Germany, told our reporter that both Chongqing and Düsseldorf faced the same pressure in urban construction, even though they were comparatively different in city size. Düsseldorf hoped to build partnerships with Chongqing in such fields as urban transportation and urban renewal.
In 2004, Chongqing and Düsseldorf officially became sister cities. During the interview, Thomas Geisel made a special mention that “it’s really great that Mr. Feng Haiyang, the first Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Düsseldorf, comes from Chongqing.” He said that currently Düsseldorf had built partnerships with Chongqing in various fields. Specifically, the St. Vinzenz Hospital of the University of Düsseldorf and the Department of Orthopedics of Chongqing Xinqiao Hospital had established a fixed mechanism of academic liaison; Düsseldorf and Sichuan Fine Arts Institute had set up an academic exchange mechanism, and every year, either side would assign two artists to the other for exchange and learning from each other.
Thomas Geisel also indicated that Düsseldorf is now renovating some old cities completed in 1990s. Following the principles of people-oriented, encouraging cycling as well as renovating old cities while developing them, Düsseldorf tried to perfectly integrate the renovation of old cities with the planning of new ones to attract more young people back to old cities and re-vitalize such old cities.
“Both Chongqing and Düsseldorf faced the same pressure in urban construction, even though we were comparatively different in city size.” Thomas Geisel said that how to make the transportation of old cities keep pace with the urban renewal was the same problem that Chongqing and Düsseldorf encountered with. He hoped that the two cities could probe into it, make joint efforts for their perfect integration of the transportation of old cities with the urban planning, and achieve the goal of urban sustainable development.
