Chongqing Highlights the Self-owned Brand Automobile

Since 2013, the share of self-owned brand automobile in domestic market has decreased for 10 months in a row and even fallen below 50%.Most insiders expressed deep concern over the future of self-owned brand automobile.
However, the market condition of Chongqing’s self-owned brand automobile is an exception. Between January and November last year, Chongqing has produced 1.45 million “Made in Chongqing” automobiles with a year-on-year growth of 26%; the yield of “Made in Chongqing” automobile accounted for 61.4% of the total auto yield of Chongqing, increasing 2% over last year. According to the statistics reported by Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, the yield of Chongqing’s self-owned brand automobile would surpass 1.6 million in 2014.
Playing a “Leading Role”
1.28 million Changan automobiles have been sold.
On December 30th last year, the rollout ceremony of the 2,600,000th “Made in Chongqing” automobile was held in Changan Yubei Factory. The new Changan Yuexiang V7 sedan was selected as the 2,600,000th rollout automobile.
For Chongqing’s auto industry, the yield of 2.6 million cars helped to consolidate its position of the largest automobile production base in China. While for the insiders, holding the rollout ceremony in Changan Yubei Factory was a kind of honor that Changan, Chongqing’s leading auto company and “frontrunner” of self-owned brand deserves.
Between January and November last year, Changan Automobile Group has sold 2.34 million cars with a year-on-year growth of 22%, which is 16% above the industry average; its self-owned production even increased when there was a decline in automobile sales in China. During the 11 months, Changan has sold 1.28 million automobiles and ranked first in self-owned brands and its sales was 25% higher than the industry average. Surprisingly, the main engine of sales growth was not micro cars but passenger vehicles including SUV, family car and MPV.
Data shows that Changan has sold 710,000 passenger vehicles between January and November last year, up 45% year on year. Moreover, its growth rate was 40% higher than the industry average and ranked first in auto industry.
 Big Body Squad of Self-owned Brands
Self-owned brands gathered in Chongqing.
Different from other provinces and cities that commonly have one or two self-owned auto companies, Chongqing has most self-owned auto companies and highest production capacity of automobile in China.
Besides Changan and its sub-brand Changan Kuayue, Chongqing now has several production bases of self-owned brand automobile such as Lifan, Sokon, BAIC Yinxiang, Brilliance Shineray, etc. and refitted vehicle manufacturing companies like Dima, Jinguan and so on. The total production capacity of above auto companies would surpass 2 million.
Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology reported that last year Lifan would produce 143,000 cars, Sokon would produce 268,000 cars and BAIC Yinxiang and Brilliance Shineray would produce 179,000 and 62,000 cars respectively. However, it’s worth mentioning that those self-owned auto brands did not focus on micro cars any more. For example, Lifan Auto was predicted to produce 84,000 sedans which would account for over 50% of its automobile output; while among the productions of Sokon, Yinxiang and Shineray, a large part was the best-selling passenger vehicles including MPV, SUV, etc.
“Chongqing has huge lineup of self-owned auto brands whose product structure is optimized constantly and output, sales and profitability are better and better.” said the head of the Auto Department of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.
Strong R&D Ability
The brand power continues to be strengthened.
“Last year, Changan’s Yidong series, CS series, Yuexiang series, Benben series all ranked first in the market segment of self-owned brands.” Zhu Huarong, president of Changan Auto Group said that having strong and consistent leading R&D ability is the aim of Changan and also the engine for the improvement of Changan’s brand influence and sales.
Depending on the excellent R&D team of over 6000 technicians, Changan Auto Group launched CS75, New Bennie, Yuexiang V7 and other new auto products in 2014, among which CS75 sold very well in half a year because of its extremely high cost performance.
The local self-owned brand auto companies such as Sokon, Lifan, Yinxiang and Shineray developed steadily and surely last year and launched appropriate auto products in accordance with the demand of market. Sokon’s Fengguang series vehicles, Lifan’s 6 series sedans, Yinxiang’s Huansu S2 and S3 and Shineray’s Sealion series all sold well last year.
As far as I know, Changan has sold about 150,000 EADO sedans between January and November last year, with a year-on-year growth of over 90%. Such cars have been sold over ten thousand for months and continued to rank first in terms of sales of self-owned brand automobile. The sales volume of Changan CS75 and BAIC Huansu SUV surpassed 10,000 and topped the list of sales of self-owned brand SUV.
