Chongqing's Sales Growth Ranks Second in the First Quarter

     On April 25, our reporter learned from the municipal Commerce Commission that Chongqing's retail sales in the first quarter reached RMB 83.33 billion, increased by 17.8% over the same period of the previous year, and the growth rate ranked second in whole country only after Tianjin (17.9%), eleven places higher than its ranking in the same period of the previous year. 

  Support with large business centers, large markets and large enterprises:

  According to the statistics of the first quarter, the commodity circulation around trade enterprises in our city was strengthened significantly. In the quarter, the wholesale sales realized by wholesale and retail enterprises in the city reached RMB 156.52 billion, increased by 41.8% over the same period of the previous year and exceeded the growth rate of retail sales by 23.8 percentage points. Since March, 2009, the growth rate of wholesale sales had exceeded that of retail sales for twenty-five consecutive months, and the gap between them had expanded from 0.1 percentage points to 23.8 percentage points.

  On the other hand, the business centers and markets had a farther reach of influence. According to the monitoring data, the retail sales of the seventeen business centers reached RMB 39.76 billion in the first quarter, increased by 26.5%. The eight major business centers in the city proper reached RMB 28.81 billion with an increase of 24.7%.  The comprehensive renovation and expansion project of Jiefangbei, the downtown area, was commenced early this year, and its area will be tripled upon completion of the three-year project. The turnover of the ten top major trade markets reached RMB 41.11 billion, increased by 40.3% over the same period of the previous year. The growth rate of the Yunan Auto Supermarket ranked the top with an increase of 172.6%.

  The performance of trade enterprises and pure department stores was in the spotlight of commerce and trade. According to the monitoring data, the sales of the ten key trade enterprises reached RMB 23.86 billion, increased by 26.5% over the same period of the previous year. The sales of the Chongqing General Trading (Group) Co., Ltd. ranked the top with an increase of 33.1%. The Xinhua Bookstore achieved the fastest growth rate at 52%. The retail sales of the ten main pure department stores reached RMB 3.53 billion, increased by 17.7%. The growth rate of Far Eastern department store, which positioned their market to be upscale products and luxuries, reached 28.9%, leading the list of growth rates.

  Continually improved consumption structure:

  The rigid consumption of basic food, clothing, and other necessities of life in the city kept booming. The retail sales of large-scale wholesale and retail enterprises for grains and oils, food, beverage, alcoholic drinks and tobacco increased by 30.5% compared with the previous year, and goods like clothing, shoes, hats and textile increased by 26.7%, with growth rates 5.1 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points higher respectively over the same period of previous year. The retail sales of daily consumer goods increased by 16.1%, with a growth rate equivalent that in the same period of the previous year.

  Meanwhile, fields like upscale and cultural consumption became new consumption hotspots. The retail sales of commodities like gold, silver and other jewelry increased by 45.8%, 4.2 percentage points higher than that in the same period of the previous year. The retail sales of commodities of cultural and office supplies increased by 44.4%, and the growth rate ranked second only after gold, silver and other jewelry.

  The growth rate of accommodation and catering enterprises declined to some extent. In the first quarter, the retail sales of accommodation and catering enterprises reached RMB 12.79 billion, increased by 16.9% with the growth rate declined by 2.1 percentage points over the same period of the previous year. Its growth rate was 1.1 percentage points lower than the average of wholesale and retail sale industries and declined from 1 percentage point higher compared with the same period of the previous year to 0.9 percentage points lower.

  The policy of "subsidized purchase of home appliances in the countryside" achieved remarkable results:

In the first quarter, 894,000 units were sold under the policy of "subsidized purchase of home appliances in the countryside", and the sales reached RMB 2.06 billion, with a subsidy of RMB 0.2 billion, increased by 75.7%, 112.7% and 80.9% respectively over the same period of the previous year. 401,000 used appliances were recycled with a value of RMB 5.529 million. 354,000 new appliances were sold and the sales reached RMB 1.3 billion. The sale of home appliances had a positive effect on the boom of rural consumer goods markets.
