In September 1996, approved by CPC Central Commission and State Council, Sichuan Province entrusted Chongqing to administer Wanxian City, Fuling City and Qianjiang Area of Sichuan Province. At the end of 1996, total population of Chongqing registered was 30,227,700. On March 14, 1997, the decision relating to approval of Chongqing as a municipality was passed on 5th Session of 8th National People’s Congress. In the end of 1997, total population of Chongqing registered was 30,429,200.
By the end of 2009, total population of Chongqing registered was 32,756,100 including resident population of 28,590,000. In 2009, birth rate reduced to 9.90‰ compared to initial 13.60‰; rate of population natural growth reduced to 3.70‰ from 6.24‰. Total birth rate of women of childbearing age was maintained at 1.5, lower than replacement level, making a historical change of type of population reproduction from the stage of stabilizing low birth rate into the stage featured with low birth rate of solving population problems from an integrated view.
